Republic Day of India & Chinese New Year
The Restigouche Multicultural Association staff, board, members, clients and supporters gathered to recognize and celebrate India’s Republic Day as well as the 2017 Chinese New Year. A culturally diverse group of about 30 people from a total of 10 different countries (India, China, Romania, Angola, Cameroon, United States, France, Vietnam, Turkey, Canada) was present at the RMA office on Roseberry Street.
The event took place on January 27th and was held during lunch hour. There was a generous and delicious array of Indian dishes prepared by Mrs. Madhubala Sharda, a local resident who is originally from India. After mingling for some time, Mr. Shri Vallabh Sharda spoke to the group about the importance of Republic Day in India. It is a celebration of the Constitution of India which came into effect on January 26th 1950. It completed India’s transition towards an independent republic, and is celebrated throughout that country every year. This year is its 68th anniversary.
Dr. Wei Wang, who settled in this region a number of years ago and is originally from China, educated the group about the 2017 Chinese New Year, which is China’s most important holiday. The celebrations start January 28th, and this year is the year of the Rooster.
Overall, the event was very successful. Everyone enjoyed themselves and the RMA staff and board received a lot of positive feedback from the attendees.
